Recent Grants
La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department (LCVFD)
The Masonic Charity Foundation of New Mexico responded to a request from LCVFD to fund the purchase of a new drone. This drone helps in firefighting and Search & Rescue efforts in the Jemez Mountains. The drone meets required criteria including withstanding strong winds and having infrared and thermal imaging capabilities. In the first six months of operation, it has been used a number of times including in trainings and, recently, in determining the origin of the McCauley Fire.
El Valle Community Center
The Masonic Charity Foundation of New Mexico received a request for contributions which would help unlock federal grant money in a 3:1 ratio. The Community Center is the heartbeat and backbone of the remote village of Villanueva, providing myriad resources including a food depot, farmer’s market, library, event space, and educational and fitness classes. It is also the only public internet source for miles. In conjunction with other local contributors unlocking the federal funding, MCFNM’s donation of $30,000 allowed EVCC to receive a total of $750,000 to repair the roof and make other structural repairs to keep this vital hub the center of the community for years to come.
Hawiwivi Kiva Restoration
Thunderstorms devastated Hawiwivi kiva in the village of Hotevilla on Hopi Reservation’s Third Mesa. Hawiwivi kiva (meaning “where the sand forms a mound”) is one of the oldest kivas in the traditional village of Hotevilla and was established shortly after the village’s founding in 1906. After the Covid-19 pandemic caused other once reliable charitable institutions to pull back on their giving, the Masonic Charities Foundation of New Mexico stepped in to fill a very necessary role in financing the grassroots effort to restore the kiva. In addition to matching contributions from Montezuma Lodge No. 1 and Cerrillos Lodge No. 19, MCFNM contributed $18,000 for the remaining costs of building materials to rebuild the sacred space at the heart of the village. This partnership is one of the first of its kind between the Masonic fraternity and its Native American counterpart, providing the means to revive this vital physical ceremonial structure.
Kit Carson House & Museum
The Kit Carson House and Museum is a National Historic Landmark in Taos, NM, and was the home of famous frontiersman and Freemason, Christopher Houston “Kit” Carson. Built in 1825, the structure is in dire need of restoration. MCFNM has committed to donating $6,000 monthly to help meet the requirements of a government grant. This will ultimately result in MCFNM providing 1/3 of the total monies over the lifetime of the grant.
